Intermediate students grow in confidence, performance skills, and build on their strengths while working to smooth over the 'bumps' in their learning. Students begin to take control of their practice time and are given more input into their repertoire choices. Students at this level are all given instruction in playing by ear and improv along with an introduction to composition, and beginning formal theory instruction. They are encouraged to fill out their lesson time with unique musical interests while maintaining a core program of classical instruction and performance. As students move to advanced levels, they are expected to take responsibility for their practice and performance results. Students planning to study music in university are invited to audition for the Conservatory Prep program, while those studying for other reasons are encouraged to explore classical music at a high level and to round out their education with church music, jazz, ensembles, pop, and more. All students are given many opportunities to participate in various performance opportunities ranging from recitals to church participation, and from studio classes to competitions and exams. Repertoire is carefully chosen with each student's strengths in mind. No matter the study stream, students are invited to explore what lifelong musicianship means to them and to develop a deep appreciation for the piano and for the role of music in their lives. |
